Custom Engagement Ring Design at EX3: From Sketch to CAD to Finished Piece

Why Off-the-Shelf Does Not Always Work
There is nothing wrong with choosing a ring from an existing collection. Most couples do exactly that, and the result is a ring they love. But some shoppers arrive with a specific vision that no ready-made ring quite matches: a particular combination of stone shape and setting style, an heirloom prong design, a detail that just does not exist in any catalog. For those situations, custom design is the answer.
At EX3, we handle custom design in-house, from the first sketch to the finished piece. Here is how that process actually works.
Step One: The Initial Conversation
Custom design starts with a conversation, not a commitment. We want to understand what you are picturing before anything gets drawn or priced. That means talking through the stone shape you want, the setting style you have in mind, the metal, whether you have reference images, and any specific elements that matter to you.
Come into this conversation with as much or as little detail as you have. Some customers arrive with a sketch they drew themselves and a folder of reference photos. Others have a single image they saved from social media and a vague sense of what they like and do not like. Both are fine starting points. Our job in this phase is to listen, ask the right questions, and translate what you describe into something we can actually build.
Step Two: The Design Sketch
Once we understand what you want, we create a design sketch. This is a hand-drawn or digital rendering that shows the proportions, the placement of stones, and the overall silhouette of the ring. It is not the final product. It is a checkpoint that lets you respond to something visual before we commit to anything more expensive.
This is the moment to be direct about what you like and what you want changed. A thicker band? A different prong style? A slight adjustment to how high the center stone sits? All of that is easy to modify at the sketch stage and much harder to change later. We would rather redraw a sketch three times than have you unhappy with the finished piece.
Step Three: CAD Modeling and 3D Preview
When the sketch is approved, we move into CAD, which stands for computer-aided design. Our in-house team builds a precise 3D model of the ring based on the approved sketch. The CAD model captures every dimension, every angle, every millimeter of metal thickness. It is the exact blueprint the casting team will work from.
You will see renderings of the CAD model before anything is cast. These digital previews show the ring from multiple angles and give you a realistic sense of what the finished piece will look like. If anything looks off, this is still a low-cost point to make changes. Once we move past CAD approval, the design is locked.
Step Four: Casting and Metalwork
With CAD approval in hand, we create a wax model from the digital file and use it to cast the setting in your chosen metal. Our settings are made in Illinois, in-house, by our own team. We do not outsource this work or use private-label settings from a third-party manufacturer.
After casting, the metal goes through finishing: polishing, refinishing of any textured elements, and quality inspection before the stone is set.
Step Five: Stone Setting
Setting the stone is the step that separates a good ring from a great one. Our setters have more than 60 combined years of experience. For prong settings, we use a cup-burr technique that rounds the tip of each prong to minimize snagging without reducing grip. Every stone is inspected under magnification before and after setting to confirm it sits correctly, is fully secure, and shows no damage from the setting process.
The stone we set is an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond, grown in our proprietary OB1X CVD chamber. Every stone carries its own IGI grading report and laser inscription, so what you ordered is what you receive, documented.
Timeline and What to Expect
Custom design takes time. From initial conversation to finished ring, the typical timeline runs four to eight weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and stone availability. We will give you a realistic estimate at the start and keep you updated at each stage.
If you have a specific date in mind, tell us early. We cannot guarantee a two-week turnaround on a complex custom piece, but we can plan ahead if you give us enough lead time.
